What is Video Compression and why bother?

Without video compression, Internet video would simply not be possible. It's that important. Video files are HUGE. Download times for raw, uncompressed video would be so high that no one would bother, even at broadband speeds.

Compression is the process of taking the huge file and knocking the file size down while preserving a decent picture. Compression works by first analyzing the complex and detailed video signal. Portions of the signal not noticeable to the human eye are dropped. Detail and resolution are lost, but hopefully not too much. Different compression methods select differing data to lose and this causes variable results.

Often, a video signal is compressed, then when opened and played, it is decompressed and some of the lost information is restored.

Codec, what is it?

Codec is a term that combines the root words compression and decompression. What is compressed must be decompressed. To do so properly requires the machine reading the file be able to reverse the process used for compression. Hence the two go together like a lock and key and form the word codec.

Compatibility issues come up with editing software or playing devices if the compression and decompression methods are incompatible. This happens frequently and produces the joy known as the video makers headache. I don't know any serious video maker who hasn't struggled at one point with compression incompatibility.

Different software platforms and the file formats they produce differ, in part, by their codecs. So if incompatibility arises, it almost always can be traced back to codecs.

Rarely do you need to concern yourself with the specifics of which codec is being used when, but being aware of compatibility issues can help you slog through the video production process whenever the inevitable problems arise.

The wonderful world of digital video is drowning in a sea of alphabet soup. Do you get frustrated not knowing an .avi from an .flv?

To help you master the world of Internet and digital video, I have compiled a series of articles giving you a comprehensive, yet easy to understand list of all the different digital video file formats. This special series of user-friendly guides includes definitions of all the technical jargon you need to understand digital and Internet video.

WHY SO MANY?

If you want to know why there are so many confusing formats, blame the fact that everybody feels the need to have their own. Each development or manufacturing company, each standardizing organization, and every combination hereof, all have to come up with their own proprietary software codes and methods.

On one hand, that gives you lots of choices. On the other hand, it makes things confusing and sometimes prevents stuff from just WORKING!

Fortunately, much of this stuff actually works together. There are lots of friendly alliances and most folks work with a goal of compatibility and universal platforms in mind. The geeks really are trying to make it easy on us folks!

Another thing that helps it all work without you needing to become a geek yourself is the fact that most computers today are loaded with multiple media player software, so just about any format will play if you click somewhere.

You often don't really NEED to know exactly what you're doing...trial and error gets you to the right place relatively quickly. But if you're like me, I want to know what's going on so I don't waste any time.

Another word of caution about freaking out over file formats....although the technicians love to argue about specifics, most of these file formats, especially real video, quick time and windows media files are all similar in size and quality when they are looked at by humans. Some people swear one or the other is better, but their eye sight must be better than mine. The differences are small.

Also keep in mind that not all formats are suitable for Internet Video, where file sizes need to be small. New HD formats are great for home entertainment, but are way too big for the web.

To make the article series complete, we have including digital still image formats as well as video formats.

Let's start with the letter A:

AVCHD: Stands for Advanced Video Codec High Definition. This is a high end consumer home electronics format developed by Sony and Panasonic for HD home theater systems. It's not a web format.

AVCHD is in its infancy as a format and will someday be much more common. Since it's new, compatibility is still an issue. Video editing software applications are slowly adding this format to their repertoire.

AVCHD uses MPEG-4 H.264 encoding which is standard for many video formats. Blu-ray players will eventually play this format too and it will become a standard in home theater systems.

.AVI This is a format for motion picture files developed by Microsoft that conforms to standards set by Microsoft Windows Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF). .AVI stands for Audio Video Interleaved and works with applications that capture, edit and playback audio and video, like Windows Movie Maker. Because it is windows-based, .avi format is virtually universal. AVI contains multiple streams of different type data, including a control track and separate video and audio streams.

As with all Microsoft products, this format is extremely common. .AVI is known for good video quality and commonality. AVI creates relatively large compressed files that retain high quality.

DivX: A popular video compression software known for being able to squeeze an entire movie onto one CD. DivX has the reputation of being powerful and stable, providing excellent quality and high compression. This software has been developed jointly by the DivX Networks and the open source community, which many people feel is the best method of software development. Lots of brains with one goal. The hot new thing in DVD players is that some now play DivX files in addition to MPEG-2 files.

Some say DivX become the Internet's de facto distribution standard, and it has the advantage of allowing viewers to skip around while watching. Some buffering is to be expected, but it works just like a video on your hard drive - you can forward, rewind and pause whenever you want to instead of being restricted to watching it from start-to-finish as it downloads.

Another popular feature about DivX is the open platform. Anyone can design plug-ins for DivX Connected using its open source SDK. It uses the Gecko rendering engine; the framework behind Firefox.

Flash video, which is given the file extention .flv is perhaps the most common format on the web today. You'll see the .FLV file extension on videos encoded by Adobe Flash software to play on Adobe Flash Player. Virtually everyone has these since they're free downloads. Flash delivers more video over the Internet than any other file format.

Flash was originally a Macromedia product but is now Adobe.

Notable users of the Flash Video format include YouTube, Google Video, Reuters.com, Yahoo! Video, and MySpace. Many television news operations are also using Flash Video on their websites.

FLV is probably the single most common format on the internet. .FLV gives one of the smallest file sizes after compression.

Flash Video is viewable on most operating systems, via the widely available Adobe Flash Player and web browser plug-in. Flash video also plays on several third-party programs such as MPlayer, VLC media player, Quicktime, or any player which uses DirectShow filters such as Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player, and Windows Media Center. .GVI is the file extension for Google Video File, a video format developed by Google and used as their proprietary video format.

Developed to solve compatibility issues, Google Video Player was another way to view Google videos and it runs smoothly on both Windows and Mac OS X. The Google Video Player rendered files in Google's own Google Video File (.gvi) media format and supported playlists in "Google Video Pointer" (.gvp) format. (More on that confusing duo in a second)

Why two Google video formats? Size. When users downloaded to their computers, the resulting file used to be a small .gvp pointer file rather than the full sized .gvi video file. Much like a link, the pointer file, when run, would point to and then download the actually video file to the user's default directory. Seems like the long way around, but what do I know?

As of August 17, 2007, Google Video Player has been discontinued and is no longer available for download from Google Video website. I don't miss it. The option to download videos in GVI format has also been removed, the only download option remaining for iPod/PSP (MP4 format). Guess it all just got too confusing for words.

FROM THE NEW BACK TO THE OLD

Graphics Interchange Format with the file extension .GIF is one of the original digital still formats. It dates back to the pre-historic days of CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the web due to wide support and portability.

The biggest drawback if GIF was poor color reproduction. Many people thought it wasn't adequate for reproducing photographs when brilliant and accurate color was important. It's better suited for more simple images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

GIF is for still images only and can not handle moving video files.

Tagged Image File Format (abbreviated TIFF) is a container format for storing images, including photographs and line art. It is now under the ownership of Adobe. Originally created by the company Aldus for use with what was then called "desktop publishing," TIFF is a popular format for color and black and white images. The TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications, by publishing and page layout applications, by scanning, faxing, word processing, optical character recognition and other applications.

Adobe Systems, which acquired Aldus, now holds the copyright to the TIFF specification. TIFF has not had a major update since 1992, though several Aldus/Adobe technical notes have been published with minor extensions to the format.

Video Transcoding for Optimal Storage Size

If you want to be able to save a lot of videos in your hard drive and keep good quality on each and every one of those files then you will need to use some video transcoding tricks which include the use of codecs and audio compression as well. In order to optimize the file size of your videos we will have to separate the two streams found in such files, let's start by analyzing the video stream.

When it comes to video compression the best containers to use are: AVI, WMV and MKV -- we are not going to suggest the MPEG-1 format which is used in VCDs because the compression used by this container is not very efficient and the video quality is not that great, but if you prefer this particular container to encode your videos with you or more than welcome to do so.

The AVI video stream can be optimized by using either the DivX or Xvid codec in order to increase the quality and compression of your video file, you will need a bit rate calculator in order to find out the file size after using a certain bitrate, this calculation also takes into account the audio compression that you will use, if the bit rate calculator that you use doesn't include the audio stream you can assume that an MP3 audio file will range between 50 to 100 MB for an hour and a half movie, if you are planning to store this video in a CD this means that you will have between 600 MB to use for the video stream.

If you have captured an hour and a half of video using your camcorder you can set the video bit rate at around 900 to 1100 kbps and your MP3 file at 128 kbps we should be good enough to produce a file which is close to 700 MB, this particular file size is also optimal if you want to keep your videos on your hard drive.

If you have 100 GB of hard drive space you will be able to store around 142 movies which should be good enough to keep a lifetime of memories that you have captured using your camcorder. Other very efficient video containers to use in order to maximize the quality of your files and reduce the size of them are WMV and MKV however, if you decide to use the MKV or Matroska container you will have to download a special video player such as video Lan or VLC.

Please note that we have not suggested the use of MPEG-2 due to the fact that such container requires a very high bit rate in order to maintain video quality which sacrifices the file size, the average size of a 1 1/2 hour recording using the MPEG-2 container would require an average bit rate of 4000 kbps which will take close to 5 GB of space for a single file, as you can see this file size is not very friendly unless you're planning to burn the resulting video file into a DVD or high-density Blu-ray disc.

Video streaming is the process of converting video and audio into a compressed digital format, then distributing the data through computer networks. This compressed data can be more easily delivered using computer networks because of its smaller size. The video and audio can be live or pre-recorded content, and can be continuously streamed or delivered as on demand content.

Internet video streaming is similar to standard television broadcasting. Software is used to convert video and audio into a format that is suitable for delivery using a computer network. Television stations use special hardware to convert video and audio data into a format suitable for broadcasting. Special computer network transport protocols enable the delivery of multimedia content to the end user ( viewer ) versus using broadcast transmitters to send the video and audio content to individual television sets.

The first step in the video streaming process is to digitally compress the audio and video content. This is required to conserve bandwidth that is used for the delivery of the content. Specially developed software applications, called codecs, are used to compress the video and audio data. Codecs use mathematical algorithms to compress the data. Most codecs use a method of data compression known as lossy data compression. This method allows the compression of the content without losing the quality of the original video and audio content. Advanced codecs require large amounts of computer resources for high definition video and audio data compression. A balance must be established between the compression quality, bandwidth consumed and computer resources used. This balance ensures a quality viewing and listening experience for everyone.

The next step is to distribute the encoded video and audio content. Special server software is required for the continuous distribution of multimedia content. This specialized software can be installed and run on various computer operating systems including: Windows, Linux and Macintosh; in addition to several other computer operating systems. Individual files can be distributed using on demand content delivery, without the need for specialized server software. On demand content can be hosted using a standard website account.

The final step is to prepare the compressed content for delivery. The method of data delivery used to transport the content via computer networks is determined by several factors that include: software used for the compression of the audio and video data, architecture of the computer network used for content delivery and end user requirements. Delivery of this data over computer networks uses special software or hardware instructions to route the video and audio content to the end user. Each computer network transport protocol has its own unique characteristics that make it applicable in specific situations. Methods of multimedia data transport include: HTTP, RTSP, IP Multicast and P2P.

No broadcast license or technical certification is required for Internet streaming, unlike a standard television broadcast station. Standard television broadcast stations are required to have a broadcast license and certified broadcast engineers. The only requirements for Internet video streaming are: specialized data delivery server software, special audio and video encoding software and large amounts of bandwidth. Bandwidth is required for the delivery of the video and audio content to the end user. The formula for determining the amount of bandwidth required for video streaming is: Bandwidth required = data encoding speed x number of desired consecutive users.

All multimedia content is subject to applicable intellectual property regulations. These regulations differ from country to country; however the general rule for audio and video content is the station originating the Internet stream must own, or have a license to distribute material that is covered under copyright regulations. Content that has been released under creative commons, public domain or has fallen out of copyright protection is not subject to intellectual property regulations and can be streamed with no special content licensing requirements.

I don't know about you but the thing I hate about doing videos is the time that they take to make good ones and the size of the thing when you have finished. Beauty is in the Eye of the B-Roll

The beauty of video is that you can adjust the storyboard after the fact and even cover up some on-camera gaffes by judiciously overlaying such things as music, narration, titling and cutaways. In fact, it is not at all unusual to discover in post that an extemporaneous quip or gaffe can actually improve production value by adding the quintessential element of humor to your production. I would even go so far as to stretch this concept to point out that if you aren't having fun during the production, that your final cut will show it. That is not to say that you won't have to contend with the occasional production delay, especially if you are shooting on location. The important thing is to roll with the punches and not to go into the project as if it were root canal.

This brings up another point: on-screen talent. Unless you have any acting credentials or are a noted public speaker, the secret to a riveting video is for the most part to leave it in the hands of professionals. That doesn't mean that you can't include an intro featuring the CEO. Just don't expect people to line up to see your video debut if you have never done tv before and are going to try to carry the production on your own. Nothing kills production value faster than a ham handed amateur that is obviously reading from a teleprompter, droning on and on about how long their firm has been in business and why you need to do business with them. Far better would be to hire a model or actor that has the experience and on-camera presence to make your video must see tv. In fact the best way to do this is to set up a casting call where talent can be videotaped while performing the first few lines of your script. From experience I can assure you that there is a huge difference between seeing an 8x10 glossy and seeing an actor on tape. Many production companies will even agree to arrange to tape your casting call as part of the preproduction process. Once you review their demo tape, it usually doesn't take long to determine who it is that you want representing your company.

The BIG Day Arrives

Once you have your storyboard & script, have determined the location and have cast the parts, it's time to roll the camera. Many times clients will request that two cameras be used in the taping of their production. The problem is that two cameras usually doubles the price, since you will need not only an additional camera, but also an additional camera operator as well. To give their production professional appeal, clients naturally want to cut between a medium and a closeup shot. What many videographers won't tell you is that you don't necessarily need two cameras to get this effect. All you need to do is shoot the sequence twice, once from each angle. This will give you a multi-camera look with a single camera charge.

Before shooting commences you also have to allow the videographer and crew an hour to set up and test lighting, rig booms and microphones, deploy any backdrops, and set up props, accessories and monitoring equipment. While it is certainly permissible for you and/or members of your staff to be present during taping, I highly recommend that you steer well clear of the crew during set up and breakdown of the equipment. This is for your safety, not to mention the fact that you are being billed for both of these periods and any delay will only add to the charges. If you are going to be on-camera, this is a good time to talk to makeup and get into wardrobe. During taping, make sure that neither you nor your staff delays or interferes with the production. In fact, the best place to be when you are not onscreen is in front of a monitor where you can see what the camera sees. If you have any questions or suggestions, write them down and then discuss them with the director after the scene is complete. Just don't make it a habit to nitpick or "co-direct" the taping, or it could prove a very long and expensive production.

The Postest with the Mostest

Although it is not unheard of for a client to be in attendance during post production, you really should give the editor the latitude to create the first cut on his or her own. The first cut is simply a working version of your finished video minus music, titling and narration. Again it is a mistake to micromanage your editor during this part of the process, as it is time consuming and more importantly unnecessary. Why? The first cut is simply a rough approximation of the video that will be presented to you so that you can make suggestions as to content and so the director can sit down with you and make recommendations with regard to narration, titling, music and even any reshoots that are deemed necessary to complete the project. In other words, this is the appropriate time and place for you to get involved in the direction that the video is taking.

This is also the place to consider how much of your budget to spend on animation, after effects, stock or custom music and the like. While this might tend to intimidate those uninitiated to the world of post production, any capable videographer will walk you through the pros, cons and costs of these added extras. For instance, while a custom sound track might be something you feel you can't live without, bear in mind that unless you intend to shoot a series of videos, there is a wealth of stock music tracks that can be had on the cheap that will give your production that polished look. After effects and animation can also add to your tab considerably. Unless they are absolutely necessary to production continuity, you want to use them sparingly. That is not to say that a graphical overlay, such as those used on HDTV won't spruce up your final cut. Just make sure you get a price that you and your budget can live with.

Eye Appeal is Buy Appeal

Make sure that you leave enough in your budget for packaging. When it comes to promotional dvd's there are a multitude of packaging options that can be brought into play. If you intend on using the finished product as a direct mail piece, you might like to consider having a customized mailer designed. At the very least you will want to design a label and jewel box cover that will give your finished product the look and feel of a Hollywood blockbuster. After all, this is what consumers are used to seeing when they head down to the local video store. So don't short sheet your project by relying on plain Jane packaging. While a little more expensive per unit, the right packaging will more than pay for itself in increased sales.
